2023 Chinese Language Day:
Chinese Wisdom for a Green World
2023 is a critical year for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development. Midway to the deadline set out in the Agenda, we are unfortunately far off track for many SDGs. As Secretary-General Guterres pointed out, it is high time to turn words into action and redouble our efforts to regain the lost ground for sustainable development.
In this context, this year’s Chinese Language Day will be held under the theme of “Chinese Wisdom for a Green World” to provide Chinese wisdom and solutions for green and sustainable development, thus echoing the Water Conference, the SDG Summit, and other important SDG-related meetings held or to be held by the UN this year.
Chinese Calligraphy Exhibition:
All Things Governed by the Laws of Nature
The calligraphy exhibition “All Things Governed by the Laws of Nature” by artist Mr. Cui Xuelu will trace the five thousand years of calligraphy history, elaborating on the concept of harmony between humanity and nature in Chinese calligraphy.
In 2009, UNESCO included Chinese calligraphy in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Cui will give an interactive lecture in Conference Room 9 from 11:15 to 12:30 on April 20, which is to be broadcast live on UN Web TV.

Exhibition Foreword:

The supreme masterpiece of cursive style breaks through the conventional rules
of calligraphy and leads to the realm of "illusion and imagination." The
unrestrained strokes seem to penetrate the mysteries of the universe and
converge into the profound realm.

▲ Therefore, Tao is great; Heaven is great; Earth is great; Human being is also
great. In the universe, the four are great, and the human is one of them.

▲ Weapons are the tools of violence; all decent men detest them.

the feeling of ease.
— Chapter 35 of《Dao De Jing》

View on Calligraphy | Reading, understanding, writing from the Heart
The term "calligraphy" as it is currently used is only a superficial representation of the art
form and has not yet reached the level of the TAO, which is a central concept in Chinese
philosophy, religion, and art.
Tao is often translated as "the way" or "the path," and it refers to the natural order of the
universe that governs all things. This natural order is characterized by a sense of balance,
harmony, and interconnectedness, and it can be observed in the cycles of nature, the flow
of time, the creations of living beings, and in Chinese Calligraphy, which reflects a deep
appreciation for the interconnectedness and interdependence of all things in the universe.
Based on years of experience and insights, I have come to my own understanding of
calligraphy:
1. Reading
Aim for profound and lofty understanding of the text to deepen one's knowledge of
calligraphy
2. Understanding
Cultivate a calligraphic mindset from classic works and seek the original source of
enlightenment
3. Writing from the Heart
Achieve a state of selflessness and create a new self through writing
